Fortunately it seems like the project has been shelved. While newspapers like the <a title=\"Beijing's hutong saved after heritage groups campaign\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/asia\/china\/7989545\/Beijings-hutong-saved-after-heritage-groups-campaign.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Telegraph<\/a> report that the project was halted due to pressure from preservation organizations such as the<a title=\"Beijing Cultural Heritage Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CBYQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fen.bjchp.org%2F&amp;rct=j&amp;q=Beijing%20Cultural%20Heritage%20Project&amp;ei=Us17TMKlKYW6sQOpzomDBw&amp;usg=AFQjCNHDH7VespP2-R71sRT0ESsaS8rKPw&amp;sig2=ZYS_eoyiDnqXHajsdeKM4g&amp;cad=rja\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Beijing Cultural Heritage Project<\/a>, it was most likely stalled due to the Chongwen and Dongcheng district governments merging this summer. Although this part of Gulou might be safe for now, the northwest corner pictured above was already destroyed this past year to make way for a new transportation center.
