ABOUT:
Matthew Niederhauser is an artist who pushes the limits of emerging technologies across a wide range of mediums. His most recent work especially focuses on the creative and interactive potentials of AI. His award-winning projects have exhibited internationally and premiered at Venice Immersive, Sundance New Frontier, Tribeca Storyscapes, and IDFA DocLab. As the Managing Director of Onassis ONX, Matthew helps guide a cultural platform where creators and institutions come together to imagine new worlds, empowering those making groundbreaking works that advance digital cultures.
In a previous life, Matthew studied anthropology at Columbia University and worked on longterm documentary projects across China. This work was supported by the Pulitzer Foundation and featured in publications such as The New Yorker, Wired, The New Republic, Atlantic CityLab, Vice Motherboard, Bloomberg Magazine, and The New York Times. During this time he also published Sound Kapital, a collection of portraits exploring China’s underground music scene.
Matthew then earned his MFA in Art Practice and Theory from SVA while also a Visiting Scholar at the MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU), Visiting Artist at the MIT Center for Art, Science, and Technology (CAST), and Member of New Museum’s NEW INC. At NEW INC, he cofounded Sensorium, an experiential studio working at the forefront of immersive storytelling.
Matthew continues to develop new projects both independently and with Sensorium while also acting as the Managing Director at Onassis ONX, a global platform within the Onassis Foundation dedicated to elevating innovative creators in the development, presentation, and distribution of new media artworks and immersive experiences. As an engine for shaping art and advanced technologies, Onassis ONX empowers artists producing genre-defying works through access to our studios, while also bolstering a growing ecosystem of cultural institutions ready to respond to new forms of creative expression.
